antonio perez garcia general manager abba hotel bratislavaTempted by hospitality since the early age, he studied tourism at the Universitad Rovira i Vergili in Barcelon. In the country with such long and successful tourism tradition he had plenty opportunities to build an impressive career. Starting at hotel reception he has built his way up to the general manager position in Hotel abba Rambla – Barcelona at the age of 27.

Today he plays an important role in strategic growth of the abba hotel chain by leading their new hotel in capital city of Slovakia - abba Bratislava Hotel.

BRATISLAVA HOTEL MARKET

Antonio Pérez agrees that Bratislava is a challenging market nowadays and very different from Spain tourism industry, which has longer tradition and plays very important part in the country´s economy. In Slovakia, hotels, especially larger international hotels, depending not only on corporate clientele, are facing two big challenges. The first one is the quality of services, which is still not as good as is expected. Therefore in abba Bratislava Hotel the management is spending a lot of time training the employees to achieve high quality of services.
The second challenge is marketing and promotion of Bratislava towards international markets. The sad fact is, as often repeated by all the foreign hotel managers currently working is Slovakia, that the city is not known abroad. Many people have difficulties to place it on the map. Even though, Antonio points out that Bratislava has a lot of potential, coming also from its favorable geographical location in the middle of Europe.
With the increase of the number of hotel rooms over last couple of years Bratislava has to focus more on creating additional demand for hotels to be able to survive. A modern convention centre would be a big step ahead, as well as more flight connections to attract not only MICE clients but also leisure travelers. However Antonio agrees that location of the city close to Vienna brings other additional benefits as well.

SUCCESS IN HOSPITALITY

Antonio Pérez became a general manager at Hotel abba Rambla – Barcelona at the yearly age of 27 and he was one of the youngest hotel managers in the city. As he shares with us: ´To become a successful hotel manager you need to be prepared to sacrifice some parts of your life to the hotel. Hotel manager does not have office hours. He or she has to be available and flexible, depending on the guests demands and depending on what is happening at the hotel. If you want to be a successful hotel manager, you have to be prepared to work really hard and try to ensure your guest satisfaction at all times.´
Managing people is one of the biggest challenges hotel manager has to face, Antonio continues, especially if the cultural differences play a role in the particular circumstances: ´The best way to manage is to surround yourself with the best people. Also you have to be able to explain all your employees that you are together on the same ship. People have to understand that they are a part of the company. Here in Bratislava we are trying to adapt our chain principles to the local culture and benefit from our rich experiences from Spanish tourism industry as well.´

The key elements of a successful hotel according to Antonio Pérez include good product – offering all the facilities the guests expect and fulfilling their expectations with high quality services. As he continues: ´In this market we have a lot of opportunities to attract guests, for example on the internet. The real challenge starts when the guest arrives, because we have to motivate him to come again, not try something else over and over. And this is a place where hotel employees play a key role. Hotel employees make the real difference about how comfortable a guest feels, because the facilities are very similar in many hotels. Also in this age of internet guests often use online channels to share their experiences, so if a hotel is not performing well in the terms of quality, it can lose a lot of other potential customers. Therefore it is crucial to make extra effort to ensure guest satisfaction.´
